Not-a-Number. A special string of bits encoded according to the IEEE 754 Floating-Point Standard. A NaN is the proper result for certain arithmetic operations; for example, 0/0 = NaN. There are two types of NaNs, quiet NaNs and signaling NaNs. Only the signaling NaN raises a floating-point exception when it is generated.
