There is an increasing capability to provide detailed information about movements and activities of individuals due to the proliferation of networked mobile devices, transactions, and sensor systems. The data generated in this way has privacy and security dimensions that must be negotiated to achieve the optimal benefits. In this talk I will discuss some of the tensions associated with this trend with respect to a pair of case studies. The first of these concerns the use of sensor data from 'smart' buildings to assist enterprise workflow. The second concerns the collection of medical data from monitoring patients in their homes through the use of networked devices. The goal in each case is to explore practical approaches that respect privacy while improving efficiency. At the end I will discuss some preliminary results we have obtained from surveys concerning attitudes about balancing safety with security through monitoring and surveillance.
